sticky panel and volume knob

$

I just bought a boom of ebay to compliment my receivers and touch. The control panel and volume knob are sticky to the touch. I saw an earlier post with no solution to cleaning it, or, if it's a degradation of the material, so, I thought I would post again:

1) does anyone know of a way to remove the sticky?
2) Or, is it just the material degrading?
3) Finally, the "rubber" on the top of the unit is fine, is this the same material? Or, is the panel something different?

Thanks;

Boom display - settings issue (I hope)

Hi folks,

So tonight I was connecting my Squeezethings to a new 'vortexbox'. All going just fine, but there's an issue with one of the Booms.

To try and conserve the screens on all my devices, I have them all set to go off when the devices are off - i.e. no time/date screensavers. I was trying to restore this with all the devices on the new VB. They've all worked except one of the Booms (I have 2). This display now works fine, up until it connects to the Server, then the screen goes black. I can control it and play music from LMS, but no display.

I've tried a couple of factory resets, and an xilink reset - makes no difference - assuming I'm doing them correctly. I've also reset the player preferences from LMS.

If I select mysqueezebox.com as the source, then it's fine. Screen works OK, shows what's playing etc etc, as soon as I select the local LMS, screen goes black. I think the player is still on, just that I can't see what it's doing! I've obviously also tried to make sure the settings are the same for this Boom as they are with the other one (which is working fine).

Any suggestions?? As I say, it shows up on LMS; it can be controlled from there, and plays music; it works just fine on MSB.com; and the display is fine through the network connection sequence, right up until it finds the server. So, I don't think this is a 'broken boom screen' issue - this is a setting somehwere that doesn't seem to be applying properly.

I have also gone back to LMS and set all the screensavers to date and time - just to see if I can't persuade it to behave, but that doesn't work.

Any suggestions??

As always, any advice very gratefully received.

Thanks

Donald

Boom display not lighting up at all

I am pretty sure this is not a settings issue. The display is now completely dark no matter what the setting, although everythng else functions fine via the web interface. Buttons still work. It is showing it's age, and it has the sticky paint problem now. There was a loose connection in the PSU so I changed that but still the same problem.

Solution to revive a Squeezebox Boom with failing WiFi

I love my Boom - its perfect for in the kitchen and sounds brilliant. Unfortunately the WiFi had started to become unreliable, if I connected it via ethernet then it worked fine. I knew that my WiFi network was OK because the other squeezeboxes worked well even though they were further away from the WiFi router. My solution was to purchase a mini WiFi to ethernet bridge, the Vonets VAP11N is available from Amazon for £16.

To set it up you just join the bridge's own WiFi network that starts up by default (default wifi password 12345678) then point your browser to http://vonets.cfg. Now sign in with username 'admin' and password 'admin'. Now you should be able to browse nearby WiFi networks and select your own wifi. The bridge will connect to your network next time it restarts. Network traffic is then passed from the bridge to the ethernet cable which you plug into the boom.

The white power lead can be plugged into the boom and the booms power supply plugged into the Vonets bridge (the power is passed through to the bridge's white power lead). I used a very short ethernet cable, available from amazon and used some silicon to fix the bridge to the back of the boom and keep everything neat. I blacked out the lights on the bridge which are very bright.

Couple of points:

1. You will now be powering the wifi bridge as well as the boom from the original power supply, however the bridge draws very little current and I don't run the boom at full volume so I consider the power supply will be operating well within spec.

2. After switching on, it takes a while for WiFi bridge to connect to the network and the boom will initially timeout connecting to the server. Just leave it and as soon as the network connection is made the boom will silently connect to the server, just a takes a bit longer to become available.

Picture attached to show the setup.

Audio stutters, wired and wireless

Looking for some troubleshooting assistance to determine the cause of garbled, stuttering audio from my Boom. Here's what I've tried to no avail:

  1. Switch between mysqueezebox.com and the local server
  2. try both wired and wireless internet
  3. factory reset and Xilinx reset (multiple times)
  4. try mp3, flac, and wma
  5. reseat wifi card
  6. completely remove wifi card
  7. play straight to line-in

Each time it will play for maybe a minute and then start stuttering. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

If I've deleted the player from the database, then all those stations
are gone. They were linked to the previous owner.

Boom can't automatically find an IP address..

Hi,
I have a Boom that has behaved itself for years. Yesterday it was moved, the power was interrupted, and now it won't behave.

It connects to the network OK, but it won't find an IP address automatically. The power inlet may be an issue - minor touches make the button lights flicker which seems to suggest it's not a good connection - but the unit is powered up, accepts remote control input etc etc.

I've tried factory and Xlink resets, with no benefit. I just end up in the same place: connected to the network, but not able to find an IP address.

I haven't been able to try it wired to ethernet yet - that's something that will need to wait for later in the day.

ANy advice on this?

If the power inlet is 'dodgy' can that be replaced or fixed?

Also how does the 'press knob to self-assign an IP address work'? My LMS is on 192.168..... When the Boom self assigns it goes to 169.254..... ? I don't know much about networks, but I'd have thought it would need to self-assign an IP address along the same lines as the server?

When I do this (self assign an IP address) the Boom can see the server as my music source, with the correct server IP address, it asks to connect, but then won't.... and hangs indefinitely.

So having looked at other threads I wonder if:
a) the power connection is too poor
b) the wifi card needs reseated
c) there's something else I don't know about - and as a general principle there's always lots of that.

Any advice and suggestions gratefully received as always.

Thanks

Donald

Boom auto fade out

I mainly use my Boom for Internet radio. When I first turn it on and connect to a radio station, it goes into fade out and turns off after a few minutes. I can't find any setting on the Boom or in LMS that would cause this.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

SBB audio problems at start-up

$

Hi,

Each day, I turn-on my SBB by using one of the favourites buttons (to a streamed program from a radio station - e.g. BBC), and when finished turn it off with the on/off button.

The SBB, when it first connects, outputs a continuous tone (maybe 1 in 3 starts), and, more rarely, extremely distorted audio. Both symptoms can be cleared by playing any FLAC audio, stored locally - the tone (or distortion) stops as soon as the track starts, giving the expected wonderful SBB audio... I can then return to the streamed audio preset, and everything stays good until I switch-off.

Just changing the preset to another station doesn't clear the problem (tone or distortion stays).

The SBB is synchronised with another player (a headless RPi2 + IQAudio DAC, running piCorePlayer). Output from this second player is clear/no tones/undistorted, at all times, including while the SBB gives problems. This seems to indicate that the problem isn't with the audio stream from the LMS, or the LMS.

The SBB is connected over WiFi, and the LMS runs on another RPi2, running under pCP 3.12.

SBB firmware version: 57 (the latest?)
Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.0 - 1484464958 @ Sat Jan 21 04:09:03 UTC 2017 (not the production release, but pretty recent)

The problem has been around for a while, over many versions of LMS, and also before using pCP, but I believe it now occurs more frequently. I've set-up a daily re-start of the LMS, in case that helped, but it had no effect.

The work-around of playing locally stored audio is fine for me, but isn't so popular with the other users in the household...

Any suggestions, please, on how I might stop this happening? One thing I haven't tried is turning-off synch to the other player, to what effect this has.

Thanks in advance/paul

USA SBB Display, Power Supply & Speaker Repairs?

Is there any person in United States of America that specializes in
refurbishing Squeezebox Booms?

Eventually the display dims, the speakers start distorting at low
frequencies (even without boosting the bass frequencies.)

What's a fellow to do?

Suggestions?

Maybe we have enough people here to special order the displays.

LMS Compatibility Other Radios?

What I found interesting is that a few people said that this unit sounds
better than Logitech Boom.

Maybe someone will come out with a 100% comparable radio but with updated
features so we could replace the unrepairable Boom which suffers from
speaker and display failures.

I don't have one of the Grace units. I just saw that a few said it sounded
even better than Logitech Boom which is great prIs praise.

What to do with a Boom with sticky front panel?

$

Hi all,

My Boom has served me well for many years. I decided to give it a good cleaning the other day, and the solution I used had a small amount of bleach. Well, it was just enough to interact with the button panel/knob on the front, and turn it permanently sticky!

I'm not too upset, as I'm preferring to use an Echo Dot + Denon HEOS 1 in the Boom's place. But what to do with the Boom? Sell it for parts? The display still works, although it's showing signs of age/dimming. I have full box and accessories. Do we have a place or rule about selling things here? Or is eBay better? Suggested price, considering the condition?

Different Volumes for Different Stations

Why do some stations play at half the volume of other stations and is a there a way to fix this? When I play 790 KABC on my SBB through the Squeeze Control App on my Galaxy Tab S2, this happens.

It is not consistent. Sometimes the volume is correct.

Is Boom speaker deterioration inevitable ?

I have a Boom that was purchased on day one of their availability, is
used heavily (12+ hours per day, most every day, at mostly around 40-50
volume), has spent 90% of its life with a sub-woofer attached, and DOES
NOT suffer from woofer surround separation. It is not in the direct
sun, or in a humid environment.

I'm guessing that use of an external sub-woofer is what's saving the
speaker surrounds. The crossover is filtering out the deep bass signal,
the drivers have an easier job to do, and the cones just aren't pumping
with the same amount of energy. Less stress, less wear, and the
surrounds have survived.

Just a guess, but so far so good.

Is this as bad as it sounds?

Power glitch.
Boom now displays "DAC FAIL -> CAN'T TALK" when applying power. Then appears to function properly except for no sound.

I'd miss my Boom. Perfect for my office. Great sound at medium to low volume.
