Can't open iTunes files

$

SORRY – this post belongs in the server forum but I don't see how to move it or delete it. I've reposted it there.

Just recently I started not being able to play my iTunes files. I get "Can't open file: <filename>". I have this problem using Squeezebox hardware (Boom and Duets) and Squeezeplay. I found out that if I use Squeezepad, it works fine. I've done a clean install with no change. Running the server on another Mac works fine. I've been running it on this Mac for over a year with no problem. Looking at the transcoder log, it appears that the hardware uses the faad command but Squeezepad uses something else. I'm not sure what this means.

Line In suddenly not working as input from computer

Hello
I use my Boom as an LMS player while I work, and I also connected my laptop to the Line In.
Everything working fine for a long time, then suddenly there isn't any sound from the PC on the Line In.
Plugin installed, Line In active and sound from the PC speakers.
I ran LMS in a container on a QNAP NAS and recently switched to the QLogitechMediaServer 1.08 for QNAP.
First I suspected QLMS, but I stopped it and ran LMS in a container and still no sound from the Line In.
I have removed and reinstalled the Line In plugin.
Anyone have any ideas what might be the problem?

Boom switches off briefly during playback

I have a strange issue which appears to be network specific. Using one of my private Booms in the secondary workspace, along with a Raspi LMS. The same Boom does not cause any problems at home. In the office though, I am observing a strange behavior in the Boom having very short interruptions during playback which sound like the device is going to standby and back on. Happens within just a fraction of a second and repeats roughly every 50 seconds. The display also switches off briefly and resets, i.e. if it was scrolling content, it will immediately return to the beginning of the text and restart scrolling shortly after that.
The network is 1GBit, using wired ethernet, and IPv4 and IPv6 exist on the network but as far as I know, SB devices are not aware of IPv6 anyway so that should not cause issues.
The server's log did not reveal any strange things. Nothing is added there when the interruptions take place. I'm wondering now whether it's the Raspi-driven LMS but apparently something like this was never reported.
Anybody have an idea how to troubleshoot this? I know it is possible to telnet into some Squeezebox devices but the Boom is not one of them, or at least I never managed to get in. Something might surface in the OS on the device side, however, I don't know where and how to go on. Will try a different player (Radio / Classic) in the next days to see if other players are doing the same.

Thank you and regards,
Joe

A new riddle Boom

Hi all,

another sick Boom just arrived. Besides a mostly burnt display, it also needed a new power supply connector. But that's not all. It can't connect.
Here is the list of symptoms I could find out so far:

  • Logitech logo does not appear on startup. Instead, the display stays dark longer than usual and the first thing I can see is "obtaining IP address"
  • the Ethernet (wired) MAC in my DHCP server registers as 04:00:04:00:04:00 which clearly isn't right. But it gets an IP anyway. A device name is not shown in the DHCP server at all
  • in the Boom's setup menu (after pushing the "back" button for some seconds):
    • I can see both my Logitech Media Servers, however it is not possible to register with them, and the server logs do not show any contact
    • DNS server and Squeezebox Server are indicated to have IP address 4.0.4.0 which is nonsense of course
    • sometimes, the device's own IP address also reads 4.0.4.0
    • sometimes, the MAC address is shown as 00:00:00:00:00:00
    • sometimes, going to the settings requests a setup lock code which is 1024 (found that out while I could go into the settings without the code). Most of the times however, I can get into settings without the code
    • I have changed the MAC address manually to what is printed on the bottom label of the Boom but this setting is immediately lost again
    • setting the MAC is somehow restricted where it shouldn't be. The second digit of the first MAC segment can only be set to 0 or 1 when using the "up" button on the IR remote. Using "down" reveals the values 9, 8, 1, and 0. All other segments work as they should
    • the factory reset available in the settings did not help
    • in some submenus, random horizontal lines appear on the display's right half

  • the display shows two lines where the pixels are considerably darker than in the other lines. They do show the right content. The display is brand-new, the old one showed the same issue. This must be something the Xilinx processor is doing wrong in controlling the display
  • Xilinx and factory reset both cannot be triggered on startup, neither from the IR remote nor the main user panel. It seems the firmware jumps right past the phase where these keys would be evaluated (remember the Logo does not appear either)
  • running the PCB without the Wi-Fi card, or using a new Wi-Fi card, did not fix it either
  • if the Wi-Fi board is not inserted, the PCB ends up flashing "Wireless ca" in huge letters and kind of shifted (see attachment), probably that's the same text as the "Wireless card not installed!" message that pops up every seconds in the first display line in the menu

This reminds me closely of the "MAC not set" issue I had (see https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?104987-MAC-not-set)
The impression is that whatever causes the behavior is becoming worse over time. Settings are incorrect right from the start, but at least the IP address received from DHCP is valid at first. It gets lost after a bit of time though.
What happens in the MAC setting screen indicates that some data line is corrupted and at least one bit is lost. The PCB does not have visible damage of any kind. From the "MAC not set" drama I remember that desoldering the flash EEPROM and creating a dump of it is likely to prove that the firmware image is actually okay, the issues appear to be more in the region of the CPU or the RAM, however, changing the RAM chip for a new one did not help last time.
Also tried gently flexing the board, pushing the CPU, applied freeze spray, all to no avail.

If only I could trigger the Xilinx reset!

Looks like another death, dammit.:(

I doubt this. Because if that had happened, then we would have had to
exchange many of them. And AFAIK this problem has not been "officially"
recognized, simply because it happened after SB was dead as a product line.

Boom appears to be dead - alternatives in 2018?

Well after 9 years of good service my Boom appears to be dead. Worked fine up until Friday, unplugged it to use the socket and upon replugging it in, no display or buttons light up, can't see it on the network etc.... So I'm on the look out for a replacement audio streamer.

My requirements are:
  • Decent sound quality (the Boom is great, I don't want some bass box!)
  • Must integrate and stream from my local NAS
  • High wife acceptance factor
  • Chromecast target would be great

Here I see my options as:
  • Replace with another Boom
  • Change to a Sonos system
  • Use Google Homes (or equivalent)
  • Use simple DLNA speakers

I have to be honest I'm not that keen on buying another Boom only for it to go tits up in a year or 2. Also Booms seem to be quite expensive still, although Radios can at least be picked up cheaper (at least here in Germany).

Sonos seem to be the only manufacturer that are still making streamers that connect to local NAS. I'm not interested in Spotify etc... much more interested in FLAC from my local server, with the occasional bit of internet radio.

I've seen these GGMM E speaker recommended and they at least look decent.

Chromecast would be great as I often podcast from my phone. I don't need Google assistant though (already have a Home mini).

So what are people doing here? There must be plenty in a similar situation :-)

Thanks

Broken connector in boom

I have one Boom that has a loose D.C. connector socket. Is this common?
If I wiggle the connector a bit, and don't disturb it, it continues to
connect. Annoying because if I move the Boom on my night table, I have to
fuss with it.

Is there an easy non surgical solution?

Best to all,

David

Squeezebox boom wireless encryption failure

$

I was running Squeezbox Boom without any problems for many years. I had Asus RT-AC66U then switched to RT-AC88U with the latest Merlin firmware. Still everything was OK. Suddenly a month ago I started getting Wireless encryption failure message when trying to connect to my wifi. I have 2 more Squeezbox Radios. They never had problems. Password didn't change and I double checked everything. With no encryption the Boom connects.

Does anyone have any idea if any router setting can cause this problem. The Boom connects perfectly to the old RT-AC66U router with the same encryption settings. It also connect to my phone hotspot so I suspect the wifi card is still alive and well.

Does switching mains reduces life span of boom, classic and reporter

I think we all know that the display of these players is one of the weak spots so I was wandering if it would help the overall life of the system by switching of the mains when not in use (sort of pulling the power plug from main socket).
I could image a negative side effect when doing this daily (one of the SB2 is standing next to cinema set that is switched completely powerless when not in use including the SB2)
Any input is welcome.

Boom is a magnificent unstable peace of garbage

Always regarded the Boom a very unstable and unreliable, but now it has decided to take this to a new level.
It restarts, hangs, becomes sluggish.
Yes, I have turned the power off for several minutes and yes, I have restarted the LMS.
My Touch and Radio work fine.
Any suggestions apart from throwing it out of the window?
Pulled the Ehternet cable out and now it works. Anyone know why it works for many months and then suddenly decides to not like it?

Using knob to set wifi password

$

I pulled out my old Boom and brought it up to the cabin.

As I was setting up the wireless networking, I struggled because the display is getting dim and wonky. Somehow, I managed to get the correct password in, but the next arrow was an additional space over, and I kept getting an error as I tried to connect.

I do not have the remote, so I'm just using the knob, and i guessed that the null space would be the one just to the "left" (one click counter-clockwise on the knob) of a lower case "a".

Well, now I somehow have 3 spaces before the next arrow, and I cannot figure out how to delete them.

i.e.
true password - Stay@TDL!>

my display - Stay@TDL! >

How can I "delete" those empty spaces and click next right after the last character "!"?

Or should I factory reset and try again from scratch? (if so, how to FR a Boom without the remote?)

THanks!

Can anyone please provide me a valid URL for NPR??

The network streams are not public. Affiliates are on a secure network
with credentials. The public can only access affiliates streams or
podcasts.

Get the podcasts, or get an east coast station like WGBH

Food for thought? (boom speakers)

$

Well I stumbled across https://forums.slimdevices.com/showt...l=1#post954455 and wonder why has there never (?) been a farting case reported for a radio?

Does this finally prove that booms ruin their speaker surrounds because of physical contact to the body while playing or maybe that the boom dsp "overloads" the speakers with more bass under some scenarios?

Thoughts?

I believe I accidentally changed the IP address of one of my Booms.....

......in trying to set it up after being disconnected due to issues with my system.

How do I recover it?

I have several units, Booms, Duets and Radios, all connected to the same network.

Is the IP Subnet the same for all units? How about the IP Gateway? And I assume the DNS Server IP is the same for all?

Thank you for indulging my ignorance. :)

Squeezebox Boom Rotary Encoder

My trusty desktop Boom has developed a fault with the rotary encoder used for menu navigation volume etc. The rotary element works fine, but the push button element has collapsed and no longer responds. It's lost it's 'spring' and even pushing and pulling on it fails to work.

Does anyone know the manufacturer / model of this part?

It's a 6mm shaft, but it's very short, around 8mm long and I guess is 20 pulses / revolution as it's indexed with 20 position steps.

The next step will be to remove it to see if there's any details on the reverse of it, unless anyone has any insight they can offer!

Thanks,

Andy.

Somehow to detect when the boom is being used and switch on a bass speaker?

$

Greetings my fellow survivors

I have a Boom in my room and it's connected to a big powerful Bass speaker from an old PC sound system which is hidden under the bed.

It sounds really fantastic when in use, but I realize (especially with my LMS being out of commission until recently) that it's just sitting there, powered on 24/7 wasting electricity and producing a slight hum.

Is there a way I could conditionally power this device on with a smart relay (those things are everywhere, ESP32 based Chinese made Wi-Fi switches - generally referred to as a Sonoff) by either having the relay
1) Subscribe to MQTT messages that the LMS could hypothetically emit whenever the Boom is in use (no idea how to do that though)
2) Use the sensor probe that some of the ESP based devices put out to somehow detect when the bass line is in use and switch the relay on

The first option would be more familiar to me because I'm a software person but I understand how it could be less reliable.
The second option sounds more reliable but I'm not sure electrically how I'd be able to sample a low voltage audio signal without degradation.

What do y'all think?

Would it work without the dash?

That's the latest. There is a 7.9.3 build with a bunch of fixes. But
none related to the issue you're seeing.

mysb would show the latest release officially supported by Logitech. But
that's probably becoming a moot point... as most really technical
questions end up on my desk anyway, I could probably stop distinguishing...

Boom refresh

$

I had one of my Boom which decided to have a farting speaker, and as it was also becoming pretty sticky, I did a full cleanup

- 2 re-foamed speakers
- new display
- front panel cleanup (@JoeMuc2009's method of 15 min in 65°C water + @chill's idea of spray coating)
- button full scrub + re-paint

Result is not perfect, but it's not bad. The screen seems to still have some brightness differences between columns, I don't know why (although it looks much worse on picture than it is in reality). This is a Boom where I applied Joe's diode repair, but I took references of the 2 transistors underneath, I'll see if they can be found.

No sound streaming Tidal on Squeezebox Boom

$

Hey - any help appreciated with the following.

Deezer stopped supporting Squeezebox and I swapped to Tidal. During the free 30 day trial with Tidal my squeezebox coped admirably and I was able to transfer my playlists across from Deezer to Tidal and listen to whatever I want. When the free trial ended and Tidal requested me to input charging instructions the Squeezebox stopped making a noise - the music appears to buffer on the screen and play the track, but no audio.

The same thing happened with my Roberts istream radio at this point, but it recovered on it's own and I can now stream and hear Tidal on it.

Is the issue with Tidal or Squeezebox? I noticed another forum member had difficulty swapping subscription type within Tidal. When my Squeezebox works the quality of sound is so much better than the Roberts istream. Squeezebox was purchased 2010 and Roberts istream for kitchen in 2020. 10 years on Squeezebox still rocks (when it works that is!).
